- A CARTOGRAPHER PROGRAM FOR THE SWL
- ==================================

-
- This program, also known as " MAPS AND LEGENDS" is well worth his money
- in my estimation and is one of the favourites in my program collection
- It has the outlines of all conitnents, etc.in digitized form in memory.
- These are then manipulated in some high-powered calculations to display
- and print about a dozen types of maps. What's more, you can frame
- exactly what portions of the world is desired through input criteria.
-
- Of particular interest to SWLs are AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT maps which give
- range and bearing from any desired location used as the map center. Also
- fascinating and useful are the PERSPECTIVE maps of the globe which can
- be used for anything from vieuws from an orbitting spacecraft,to
- simulating the vieuw antipodal location
- of the sun(to generate the mid-night position of an anti-sun to define a
- center of darkness in effect), the maps can be titled or marked withco-
- ordinates and notes. They are neatly displayed on your screen and can be
- dumped to a dot matrix graphics printer.
-
- One small problem with the printouts! While the globe is perfectly
- circular on the monitor, the printout tends to elongate slightly on my
- SG-10 in high resolution mode. It is printed as a true circle in medium
- resolution however. Perhaps this would be cured on another printer.
-
- See the enclosed series of maps (not included in this magazine)generated
- for the globe from North America to the Middle East. These show what
- countries would be received by dark path or terminator line path as dusk
- approached and at 1 hour intervals for prime time listening until 0500
- GMT. It also simulates the dark sectore coverage for reception of New
- Zealand, Australia and South East Asia at Ontario dawn(about 1030GMT in
- Mid-September).
-
- With this concept in mind, it is now possible to re-orient your view to
- be exactly at 90 degrees to the east or west of the dark sector. This
- puts you directly over the terminator line so that it can be inspected
- more closely. I have checked this against my invaluable DX EDGE slide-
- rule map and find it to be quite accurate. Furthermore, you do have a
- hard copy map you can mark up to suit your efforts in chasing DX.
-
- In addition the maps can be textured (in high resolution) or coloured
- (in low or medium resolution) to provide a finished display for the
- monitor or printout.
-
- If this were not enough, the individual maps in time sequence can be run
- in a "slide show" program to simulate the rotation of the globe before
- your eyea! Animation programs are available to do this even more
- smoothly, altough i have not try this yet.
-
- A 1040 St will give better results as it has 1024k of memory compared to
- 512k in a stock 520 ST. One full rotation of the globe at one hour
- intervals will require 24 frames. At 32k per frame, this will require a
- minimum of 768k, or in other words a 1040 ST. A 520ST could be used with
- a fewer number of frames and thus less smooth rotation.
-
- If you need more information on this drop TED or ASTUR a letter.
- Perhaps we can prepare a disk full of frames and a "slide show" program
- so that you can access this further.
